Shepherds
Directed by Sophie Deraspe
NOW AVAILABLE ON DVD AND ON DEMAND!!!
Mathyas trades his Montreal life as a young advertising executive to become a shepherd in Provence. However, the harsh reality of the pastoral world forces him to question his romantic vision of the profession. A visit from Élise, a civil servant who has cavalierly quit her job, gives Mathyas’s quest a new direction. Together, they begin a transhumance with a flock of sheep in their care. Through encounters and trials in the mountains, they will forge a new life for themselves.
« Sophie Deraspe surpasses herself in her direction. We knew the director of Vital Signs and Antigone was extremely talented, but what she offers here is simply magnificent. And by magnificent, we don’t mean a succession of postcard images: the filmmaker works at a higher level. »
★★★★½ – LE DEVOIR« Bergers proves to be both a solid learning story, a vibrant plea in favor of a profession threatened from all sides and a rigorous documentary approach combined with a humanist perspective. »
